What types of Insurance are there?

Find out about the main types of insurance that you may come across. Knowledge is power, and knowing what you need to protect against or is at risk will help you find the right cover.

Employers Liability Insurance (EL)

The legal must-have if you employ anyone (including temps or apprentices). EL covers claims if an employee is injured or becomes ill because of their work for you, typically legal costs and any compensation, subject to your policy terms.

Good to know: Volunteers aren’t always treated the same as employees, speak with us and we can help you understand.

Public Liability Insurance (PL)

Protection if a member of the public or third-party is hurt or their property’s damaged because of your work. This cover helps with legal defence and compensation if you’re found negligent - subject to your policy.

Example: Customer trips over your cable, or you spill paint on a client’s carpet.
Doesn’t cover: Your employees (that’s EL) - always refer to your own policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Product Liability

Cover for injury or damage caused by items you make, sell, supply, install or repair.
What it does: Steps in if a product you handled leads to loss or injury and a claim lands on your desk.
Example: A charger you supplied overheats and damages a customer’s kit.
Often paired with: Public Liability.

Please refer to your own policy or contact your insurance provider as terms, conditions and exclusions may differ between them.

Employers Liability Insurance (EL)

Professional Indemnity (PI)

What it is: Protection for advice, designs or professional services that go wrong and cost your client money.
What it does: Covers legal costs and compensation if your mistake (not shoddy physical work) causes a client’s financial loss.
Example: An incorrect wiring design spec that forces costly rework.
Doesn’t cover: Faulty installation or poor workmanship that causes physical damage - that’s usually PL/Product Liability territory.

Refer to your policy terms and exclusions to know what you are covered for.
